Clean and hygienic washrooms in shopping malls, transport hubs and other public places are essential urban facilities that, for better or worse, make an outsized impression for visitors coming to Hong Kong. Filthy and foul-smelling toilets are often a source of anxiety and repugnance for them. If Hong Kong aspires to be a world-class smart city, it seems building a truly smart washroom facility using the latest Internet-of-things technologies is a good place to start.

This smart washroom system consists of three components: the IoT sensors, the smart devices and the IoT cloud platform itself.

Installed in each washroom, the IoT sensors include:

• Wetness/Moisture Sensor – A non-contact type sensor that estimates the wetness on the floor from a short distance above the surface.
• Smell Sensor - This sensor measures the odor levels of things like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide.
• Customer Satisfaction Surveyor – This device is mounted near the exit to let users to give a rating on their various experience. Alternatively, this surveyor can be an App built into a Smart Mirror.
• Face Recognition / People Counting Subsystem – An AI system is used to count the number of users entering the facility at different time of day to ascertain the usage pattern at this location. The face recognition function of this subsystem can be used to look for and verify the cleaners are on duty during his assigned time slots and response time.
• Emergency Button with Built-in Intercom – A one-press convenient button to alert the cleaners there is some emergency need of their services. An optional IP-based intercom can also be included to talk to the facility management.
• Smart Soap / Paper Dispensers – all toiletry supply dispensers can be fitted with fill-sensors to avoid interruptions on supply.

Based on the inputs from the IoT sensors, these Smart Devices can activate additional services and actions as needed:

• Smart Bins - One source of odor is from the bacteria growth in the trash can. The fill sensor can alert for the need of clean up. Smoke and heat detector can prevent fire hazards. An auto-opener and compactor can be used to reduce the smell and increase the trash capacity.
• Smart Mirror – A useful information display that can also be used to collect user feedbacks and provides information for other alternative locations if long query is detected.
• Fresh / Exhaust Air Fan Controller – The amount of air circulation can be modulated based on the odor levels to strike a balance between comfort and energy saving.

IoT Cloud Platform and Smart Mobile Dashboards – Since the washrooms might scatter over a wide geographical area, all data are collected from sensors directly using low-power wide area network technologies, such as Sigfox or NB-IOT. The data can be collected stored in either a public or private cloud (for each customer) for analysis and reporting purpose.

A web-based dashboard application that can be run from a smartphone, tablet or a PC browser are provided for these functions:

• Allow the cleaners to report their attendance
• Allow the inspectors/facility manager to report on the work quality
• Receive alerts and notifications of various cleaning needs and/or events that requires the attention of the cleaners or management
• Check attendance of the cleaners
• See history data logs
• View various analytical reports and receive insights as generated by the system

With the so-called “Toilet Revolution” gathering steam in China during the last few years, the potential for our Smart Washroom solution for the wider Mainland China market also cannot be understated. “Toilet issues are not petty matters but an important aspect of improving infrastructure in urban and rural areas,” President Xi was quoted as saying. The Toilet Revolution is a central government campaign aimed at improving the sanitary conditions in Mainland China. HKC is honored to be awarded by DOJ of its e-booking system. The system is developed to cater the following objectives:

• To reduce the manpower to handle the room booking, less phone calling time
• To increase efficient and flexibilities on room booking of DOJ staff and LRO(Law related organization) :time saving , automatically handle of room booking, cancellations, prevent human errors, streamline user management and monitoring room booking
• To record the room booking of DOJ staff and LRO, keep and generate necessary report

The proposed system is built on cloud based approach booking process for LRO & DOJ user and DOJ admins. Users can easily use the system by login account and password anytime anywhere.

Admins can create user, suspense user, make bookings and block out space as unavailable. Admins can also pre-set the room accessories together for each type of room.

Registered users that have booking privileges can create bookings for themselves in a self-service manner. They can control the booking, cancellation and review their booking history on the system.
